North Coast Limited: Three DVD Set:  Alva Morrison captured color-footage of the Northern Pacific's premier train, the North Coast Limited, as it crossed the railway between Seattle and St. Paul. He had the foresight to ride the NCL many times when it was apparent that the train's era would end after 71-years. The program is offered here only as a three DVD set reprocessed from the original broadcast quality video masters to give full DVD resolution for much greater detail than the original tapes -- making this set a must for NP railfans. The NPRHA participated with Alva in the production of the original programs by providing historical background and footage to go along with his great footage, much of which was shot after merger. The DVDs include:

Stampede Pass – Of all the U.S. Transcontinental railroads, few could challenge the Northern Pacific when it came to the grandeur. Where it ran through the ox-bow loops at the bottom of Yakima Canyon, the cool lime-green NCL was a startling contrast against the chocolate browns of the lava flows. In this DVD you begin at tidewater in Seattle and wrestle up through majestic forest to Stampede Tunnel and then down the desert canyon to Pasco, Washington. Detailed diagrams, maps and black and white photos illustrate the standard gauge 5.5% switchback line that preceded the tunnel across the very tops of Cascade Mountains. A 7-minute synopsis of the NPRHA’s "Reopening of Stampede Pass" shows the first train through the tunnel in 13 years. Photographed and narrated in pouring rain and blizzard conditions by veteran steam and diesel engineer, Jack Christensen.

The Rockies NP crossed the American West with its endless sea of wheat, great rivers through empty range lands and finally came against the wide wall of Rocky Mountains. For 400 Miles from Bozeman to Pasco you'll be engulfed by Montana's highest mountains: a westbound trip in Summer and eastbound in February. Both east and westbound over the Butte Short line in summer. You'll climb every 2.2% grade at least twice: Butte Hill, Evaro, and Mullan Pass (on the NP’s secondary train, the Mainstreeter). You'll follow the NP from the headwaters of the Missouri to the Columbia and catch up with Lewis and Clark along the way. Excerpts from the NPRHA tape "Jim Fredrickson Remembers" of steam on Evaro Hill and the Timken Roller Bearings 4-8-4 "Four Aces" - the first locomotive of its kind.

Bozeman to Chicago
– Alva  made two round trips in summer between Bozeman and Livingston: on the ground and on board. Climbing the west slope in winter, we see big steam (4-6-6-4's and 2-8-8-4's) on the East slope from the NPRHA’s tape “In Search of Big Steam Power.” These huge monsters and the 4-8-4 Northerns move between roundhouse, coal dock and water plug. We then climb the1.8% grade to Bozeman Pass Summit and take a side trip to Yellowstone Park. The NP follows the Yellowstone River for 340 miles through the heart of Montana cattle country and then into the Badlands. Since the eastbound the NCL covered the next 660 miles to St Paul in darkness for most of the year, scenes shot from the Mainstreeter are used to illustrate parts of this segment. From St Paul the NCL sped 330 miles along the Mississippi to Chicago. Much of the historical information provided by the NPRHA’s Bill Kuebler.
