Rail Photos of Ronald V. Nixon:   Ronald Nixon loved railroading, having been born in 1911 at Gardiner, Montana, where both his parents were NP telegraphers. While living in NP depots in Montana, Ron was introduced to telegraphy and photography by his mother as a very young child. He first worked as an extra telegrapher for the NP at age fourteen and went on to dispatch NP trains at Missoula, Montana during WWII. However, most of his railroad career was spent in relay telegraphy for the NP where he gained a reputation for receiving incoming telegraphy, sending outgoing and holding a conversation at the same time without missing a beat.
Ron's photographic eye was outstanding. He recorded both the day-to-day rail operations and the scenic splendor of the land in which he lived and traveled. While he was employed part-time as a photographer for the NP, Ron also captured images of all the railroads of Montana and the Northwest. Thousands of these photos have been published along with stories that explained their significance.
Dave Sprau has arranged some of Ron's photos to tell stories, much as Ron did. Most of the narration comes directly from comments Ron send Dave with the photos he purchased. Ron's photo collection totaled more than 34,000 negatives, the balance of which has been preserved at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, which has made available the railroad images used in this 79 minutes DVD. A booklet containing full captions for all images is included with this DVD.
