Northern Pacific Flat Car Series 64000-64195: In 1948 and 1949, the Northern Pacific Railway built 196 53-foot flatcars at the company's Brainerd, MN shops in this series. The flatcars were of the 55-ton capacity with a 13" side and a deep fish belly center sill. Many cars survived into the BN merger with a few in MOW service as late as the 1980's. This model can also be made to represent cars in series 60250-60499 built in 1936 built by the NP, and 63000-63379 built in 1937 by Bethlehem Steel. The SP&S had nearly identical cars built in number series 34000-34199 in 1951. Forty of these were converted to bulkhead flatcars between 1957 through 1965 and numbered 35000-35039. The CB&Q had similar cars except their cars did not have poling pockets as did the NP and SP&S versions. The prototype for this model is 64027 and is now in Mandan, ND awaiting restoration at the North Dakota State Railway Museum. This kit includes the resin castings and decals; but without wire, brake hardware, trucks or couplers. The kit comes with both a laser cut wood deck and a resin deck, so it may be completed using either deck. The model has a "false bottom" between the deck and center beam to allow for a metal plate to be inserted adding strength and weight. The kit includes accurate decals, instructions with pictures of the prototype and a list of commercial parts (trucks, couplers, wire) needed to complete the model.
